Let's Stay Chilterns - Chilterns History
Let's read all about the Chiltern Hills - brief history and a look at what the area has to offer!
WELCOME TO THE CHILTERN HILLS...
The Chilterns lie only a few miles to the north west of London, a beautiful, unspoilt corner of England with a very rural character.
The Chilterns begin in Hertfordshire near Hitchin and stretch south-west through Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire to Oxfordshire, Berkshire and the Thames Valley. In 1965, 833 square kilometres of the Chilterns were designated by the government as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) , in recognition that the landscape is amongst the finest in the country. Click here for the Chilterns AONB website. The main aim of the AONB is to conserve and enhance the natural beauty of the area, which means that the Chilterns are protected for future generations to enjoy.
Made up of gently rolling hills and crossed by ancient trails and paths such as the Ridgeway and the Thames Path, both of which are National Trails , the Chilterns offer a varied and charming landscape, perfect for walkers. The Ridgeway follows the spine of the Chilterns, ending at Ivinghoe Beacon near Tring, and provides several days of enjoyable walking, with plenty of opportunities to stop at country pubs or stay at any number of b and b’s or inns or hotels. There are many other well sign-posted paths and access to this beautiful countryside is easy from the many local railway stations - The Ridgeway, for instance, passes right alongside Tring station and is only 35 minutes from Euston.
In May the woodland floors are carpeted with bluebells - come and take a break in the Chilterns and witness this beautiful natural wonder. Bluebell season is at the end of April and into May and The Ashridge Estate near Tring is amongst the most spectacular - Click here to see what we mean! In the Autumn the beechwoods have their turn, providing a glorious, golden hued backdrop to many of the pretty villages dotted amongst the hills. Click here to see more beautiful images to tempt you to come and experience the Chilterns. The Chilterns are great for ornothologists too, providing an excellent habitat for many different types of bird including the red kite, recently reintroduced in the Chilterns.
So, escape the city, take a deep breath of fresh air and come and listen to the beautiful song of the Skylark that fills the air all over the Chilterns. Spend a few days in a Chilterns hotel, a quiet cottage or Inn, or walk or cycle for hours in peaceful countryside and you'll soon be back for more!
