Tring is an ancient market town in Hertfordshire surrounded by beautiful Chilterns countryside, woodlands and lakes.
Tring is an historic town, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and lying at the edge of the Chiltern Hills where the Roman roads of Upper and Lower Icknield Way and Akeman Street converge. Englands oldest road, The Ridgeway also passes through the edge of Tring as do parts of Grims Ditch, an ancient earthworks.
In 1682 Tring Mansion designed by Sir Christopher Wren was built for the owner Colonel Guy. It now houses Tring Park School for Performing Arts. A later tenant was Lawrence Washington, great-great-grandfather of George Washington, the first President of the USA. In the late 19th century the estate became the home of the banking dynasty, the Rothschild family .
Tring Museum, now part of The Natural History Museum, is a major attraction in the town, housing a fascinating collection of birds and animals collected by Lionel Walter Rothschild, and opened to the public in 1892. In addition to the the museum he kept exotic animals, kangaroos, zebra, cassowaries and giant tortoises in the park. There is FREE entry to Tring museum.
Tring has a thriving High Street, with many excellent pubs and restaurants such as The Robin Hood and The Akeman, many of which are supplied by Tring Brewery. There is also a Market Place, which whidates back to the 13th century when the town was granted a charter by King Edward II, permitting townspeople to hold a market. There are markets on Fridays and fornightly Farmers Markets
The Tring museum i sfree markets are on Fridays aNearby is the National Trust Ashridge Estate, 5000 acres of woodland and downland and the Tring Reservoirs, created to feed the Grand Union Canal at it's highest point and now a protected nature reserve. Another popular attraction is College Lake Nature Reserve, run by the Beds, Berks and Bucks Wildlife Trust.
